Basic Pizza Dough
Yield: Makes enough dough for one 12-inch pizza or two 9-inch pizzas
Here is a basic pizza dough recipe, which you’ll be sure to be making over and over again. Add some sliced tomato, fresh mozzarella, and some torn basil leaves to make a B-E-A-UTIFUL margarita pizza!
Ingredients:
1-teaspoon active dry yeast
2/3-cup warm water
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1-teaspoon salt
Olive oil for the bowl
Equipment:
Measuring cups and spoons
Small bowl
2 Large bowls
Plastic wrap
Directions:
Sprinkle the yeast over warm water. Mix until the yeast dissolves, or until it is a creamy consistency, 1 minute. Combine the 2 cups flour and salt in a large bowl. Add the yeast mixture and stir until soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface, adding more flour if necessary, until elastic and smooth, 10 minutes. Coat a large bowl with olive oil. Put the dough into the bowl, turning it to coat the top. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Store the bowl in a warm, draft-free place and let it rise until its double in size, 1 ½ hours.
With your fists, flatten the dough. Divide the dough into 2 pieces and shape the pieces into balls. Flatten the dough slightly. Dust the top of the balls with flour. Place balls on a floured surface and cover with plastic wrap, allowing room to expand. Let rise 60 minutes or until doubled.
